Wood Carving Tip of the Day #35

The value of clamping

I find that clamping my work so both hands are free is always worth the effort - not to mention the added safety.

Carving a Rose Pin
by Maura Macaluso

I've been thinking about carving something special for my honey for the Valentine holiday.

I happened across Maura's rose pin and was instantly drawn to the idea of a wood rose instead of actual flowers which only last a week.

I'm planning to make mine from hardwood, something like cherry which develops a wonderful patina.

And I'll power carve it since I find the cherry is quite hard to do with knives.

I hope that you'll consider carving something special for your honey too!

Carving a Rose Pin

P.S. I had been thinking about carving a nice heart pendant but couldn't find a good carving tutorial for this project.  I'd love to work with a carver out there to create a heart pendant project, anyone game?

Folding Saws

Primos Folding Saw
Primos Folding Saw

Many people are uncertain where to get the wood to make wood canes. One of the best sources is to gather the wood while you're out and about. The easiest way is to cut your own wood from staplings that are growing in the woods. And are not owned by someone else!!

I like to keep a small folding saw with me when I go on hikes. There are many types with blade sizes from 6.5 inches to over 12 inches.

A 7 inch folding saw can easily cut a 3 to 4 inch sapling and a 10 inch folding saw can easily cut a 6 inch sapling. So, you can choose the size that will work best for you.

Some of the popular brand names are:

Corona Clipper
Fiskar
Hunter
Primos

The following link will show you a wide range of folding saws and provide reviews so that you can see other people'e reactions to using these saws.

High Torque Carver/Engraver

This powerful high-torque hand piece features variable speed, so you can always be operating at the optimum speed required by your bit or type of stock.

Because the motor is built into the hand piece, there is no flexible shaft to restrict your movements, and you can carve at any angle without worrying about damaging a flexible shaft.

The lightweight body and cord allow you to carve longer, more comfortably, and with greater accuracy. At only 6-1/4" long and 1" diameter, it fits comfortably in the hand and is light enough to be held like a pencil.
