Beginners These projects are designed to help beginners work on basic skills while completing a carving project. It's always nice to have a good result from your first carving efforts to help you develop skills and appreciation for carving. As you develop additional carving skills, you will be able to take on more challenging carving projects! | | Hand Carved Snowman Ornament by Adam Whittom | | This project is really aimed at beginner carvers and might be an inspiration for those carvers with more experience.
Adam's step-by-step tutorial makes it easy enough for anyone to succeed at this project.
We hope that you'll give it a try! |
 | Ball in a Box Tutorial by Joseph Savarese | This is a wonderful 2-part video on how to make a ball in a box tutorial. In this tutorial, Joe tells us all the tools that we need and then walks through each and every step needed to make this tutorial. Because of the quality of this video, we suggest that this is a good video for beginners!
Part II - Click here
Joe is also so good (and honest) that he has included a video of all the bloopers to creating this video. This really shows that it's never as easy as it looks!! Click here to see the bloppers video.

 | | Basics of Kolrosing by Judy Ritger and Del Stubbs | | Kolrosing is a very old method of giving fine line surface decoration to wood. It started centuries ago with simply using the tip of ones' belt knife to make fine decorative cuts - and then rubbing coal dust into it to bring out the pattern. The inner bark of various trees is also traditionally used (barkrosing). Kolrosing is an old Scandinavian tradition, dating back to Viking times and was most often used to decorate utilitarian objects, such as spoons, small bowls or boxes, cups, etc. |
 | | Carving an Indian Bust by Dylan Goodson | | In this photo tutorial, Dylan shows us how he carves an Indian bust from a upright log. |
 | | Carving a Cowboy Boot by Mike Lawrence | | In this photo tutorial, Mike shows us how he turns a cowboy book. It's a simple project and really good for beginners. |
 | | How To Carve A Cowboy by Dave Disselbrett | | In this project, you get to see the 28 steps that Dave uses to carve a cowboy. |
 | | Letter Opener by Will Hayden | | This letter opener pattern features a fun face. |
 | | Beginner's Carving Project by Northwest Wood Carvers Association | This whittling project is a wonderful first project for beginning carvers. You don't need to buy fancy tools, just use a simple x-acto knife that can be found at most hardware stores. The design is a basic fish shape.
If you're new to carving and ever considered giving it a go, this is a good place to start. |
