Well, let me tell ya somethin’ ’bout this here year zodiac calendar thing. It ain’t as simple as lookin’ at your regular calendar, ya know, the one with the January and February and all that. This here’s a whole different kettle of fish.
They got these twelve animals, see? And each year is named after one of ’em. It’s like… uh… Rat, then Ox, then Tiger, then Rabbit, and so on. A whole bunch of ’em. Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. Yep, that’s the whole shebang.

Now, why they picked them animals and put ’em in that order? Don’t ask me! Some old story, I reckon. But what I do know is, your birth year, that’s what decides which animal you are. But here’s the tricky part, it ain’t the same as your regular birthday. They use a different calendar, this lunar calendar thing. So, the dates, they change every year. Confusin’, ain’t it?
Let’s say you was born in, oh, I dunno, 1950. Well, lemme see… that would make you a Tiger. Yep, a fierce one, you are! If you were born in 1960, then you’re a Rat. Those Rats, they’re clever little fellas, always thinkin’. And so on and so forth. There’s charts and things, if you wanna get real specific. They tell you exactly which animal you are and what dates that animal year starts and ends. Handy, if you ask me.
- Rat – (shǔ) They say these folks are adaptable, quick-witted, and always lookin’ on the bright side.
- Ox – Strong and steady, those Oxen. Hard workers, they are.
- Tiger – Brave and confident, like I said. But sometimes a bit too… energetic, you know?
- Rabbit – Gentle and kind, those Rabbits. But don’t let that fool ya, they can be tough when they need to be.
- Dragon – Powerful and charismatic. Born leaders, they say.
- Snake – Wise and mysterious. They keep their thoughts to themselves, those Snakes.
- Horse – Free spirits, those Horses. Always on the go.
- Goat – Creative and artistic. They see the world a little differently.
- Monkey – Clever and mischievous. Always up to somethin’.
- Rooster – Proud and confident. They like to be in charge.
- Dog – Loyal and honest. Best friends you could ask for.
- Pig – Kind and generous. They enjoy the good things in life.
Now, these animals, they ain’t just names. They say each one has its own personality, its own way of doin’ things. Like that Rat, always thinkin’. Or that Ox, workin’ hard all day long. And the Tiger, well, they’re just plain fierce! It’s kinda like… how folks are different, ya know? Some are loud, some are quiet. Some are fast, some are slow. It’s all just part of life, I reckon.
And they got these elements too, like metal, water, wood, fire. That’s another layer to it all. Each animal year has an element tied to it. It gets complicated, real complicated. But it’s interesting, you gotta give it that.
They even got charts, from way back when, like 1900, all the way up to the future, 2031 and beyond. You can find your year, see which animal you are, and even figure out your element. It’s all there, if you know where to look. This here Chinese zodiac, it’s been around for ages, longer than you or me, that’s for sure. So, there must be somethin’ to it, right? People still talkin’ ’bout it, still lookin’ it up. Must be important, somehow.
Anyways, that’s the gist of it. Twelve animals, a lunar calendar, and a whole bunch of personality traits. It ain’t the kinda stuff you learn in school, but it’s part of the world, just like the sun and the moon and the stars. So, next time you see a Rat, or an Ox, or a Tiger, you might just think about this here Chinese zodiac chart and wonder what kind of year it is.

So, if you want to know what your animal is, just find yourself a good chart. They’re all over the place, specially on the internet, or in them books about the stars and such. And don’t you worry if it sounds complicated at first. It ain’t rocket science. Just takes a little figurin’, that’s all. And remember, it’s all just for fun, ain’t nothin’ to get too serious about. Just a bit of somethin’ to think about, somethin’ to talk about, when you ain’t got nothin’ better to do.
