Okay, so I’ve been getting into Chinese astrology lately. It’s way more complicated than the Western zodiac stuff I grew up with! I decided I needed a good book to help me understand it all, so that’s where this whole thing started.
Finding the Right Book
First, I hit up my local bookstore, but honestly, the selection was pretty thin. A couple of general “learn about astrology” books, but nothing specific to the Chinese system. So, I moved my search online.

I spent a good hour just browsing different websites and reading reviews. It’s tough because there are so many options, and you don’t really know if a book is going to be too basic or way too advanced until you actually get your hands on it. I finally settled on one that seemed like a good middle ground – not too fluffy, but not a textbook either.
Diving In
When the book arrived, I was pretty excited. I flipped through it, and it looked promising. Lots of charts and diagrams, which I figured would be helpful. I started reading it that night.
- The first few chapters were all about the history and the basic concepts. Stuff like the five elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water), Yin and Yang, and how the lunar calendar works. It was a lot to take in, but the book did a decent job of explaining things.
- Then it got into the 12 animal signs. I already knew my animal sign (I’m a Dragon, by the way!), but I learned so much more about the characteristics associated with each sign, and how they interact with each other.
- The most complicated part, I think, is figuring out your “Four Pillars of Destiny.” This is where you take your birth year, month, day, and even hour, and use them to create a chart that supposedly reveals your personality, strengths, weaknesses, and even your future!
Putting it into Practice (Sort Of)
I’m still working my way through the book, but I’ve already tried to figure out my Four Pillars chart. It’s definitely not easy! I had to keep referring back to different sections of the book, and I even checked some stuff online to make sure I was doing it right. I’m still not 100% sure I’ve got it all correct, but it’s been a fun learning process. I feel like I am begining to have a basic level to play with.
I’ve also started looking at the charts of my friends and family. It’s pretty interesting to see how their personalities match up (or don’t!) with their animal signs and elements. It’s all in good fun, of course, but it definitely makes you think!
Overall, it’s been a really cool experience so far. I’d definitely recommend getting a good book if you’re interested in learning about Chinese astrology. It’s a lot to wrap your head around, but it’s also super fascinating.
