Well, let me tell ya, 1835, that was a year of the Goat, yessiree! I heard tell it from my old grandma, she knew these things. 1835 Chinese zodiac, that’s what they call it, fancy like.
Now, this Goat thing, it ain’t just any goat, mind you. It’s part of some big ol’ cycle, twelve years it goes on, they say. Like, one year it’s the Goat, then the next, it’s somethin’ else, a Monkey I think. Goat, Monkey, back and forth, year after year. Keeps goin’ round and round like a mule in a circle.

- Goat year, good luck in your work, they say.
- But gotta be calm, gotta think things through.
- Don’t go rushin’ into things, that’s what I always say.
Grandma used to say folks born in the year of the Goat, they’re kinda calm, peaceful-like. Don’t like fightin’ or arguin’. But they got a good eye for things, artsy and such. They know what looks good, what feels good. Kinda like me with my quilts, I reckon.
And the Rabbit, oh that Rabbit! Luckiest of the bunch, they say. Mercy, elegance, beauty… big words for a little critter. But that’s what the old folks told me. Rabbit folks, they’re calm too, just like the Goats. Don’t want no trouble. They like things pretty, I guess. Like a flower garden, all neat and tidy.
Now, this whole zodiac thing, it’s tied to the moon, not like our regular calendar. That’s why the dates don’t always match up, see? Like, 1835, the Goat year started January 29th. But the Monkey year after that, it started February 17th, 1836. Confusin’, ain’t it? But that’s how they do it, been doin’ it for ages.
Then there’s the Snake, sneaky little fella. Sixth in the line-up, they say. Smart, wise, good talkers. They know what they want and they go get it. Determined, that’s the word. And they care about folks, too, which is more than you can say for some.
So, 1835, Goat year. Good year for work, gotta be smart about it though. And these animals, they ain’t just animals, they mean somethin’. They tell ya somethin’ about the year, somethin’ about the folks born in that year. It’s all connected, see? Like the threads in one of my quilts, all woven together.
I saw some folks talkin’ about different colors, different elements, all tied to the Goat too. Sounds complicated. But it’s still the same Goat, I reckon. You wanna know what year you are? Gotta look at that table, they got charts and things for that. Figure it all out for ya. Chinese zodiac signs, they call ‘em. Lots of folks believe in ‘em. Me, I just listen to what my grandma told me. Goat year, good year. That’s all I need to know.

They even got this stuff on Amazon now, can you believe it? Folks sellin’ books and trinkets, all about the Chinese zodiac. “Chinese zodiac” they call it, easy to find. World’s a changin’, ain’t it? But some things stay the same, like the moon and the stars, and the animals in the zodiac.
So, if you were born in 1835, you’re a Goat, plain and simple. And that’s all there is to it, as far as I’m concerned. Don’t need no fancy books or charts to tell me that. Just good old common sense, and a little bit of what my grandma taught me.
