Well, let me tell you about this Chinese zodiac thing, the lunar calendar and all that. It’s kinda like how we used to tell time back in the day, but way more complicated, you know?

So, they got this lunar calendar. Now, what’s that? It’s all about the moon, see? Our regular calendar, the one we use every day, that’s a sun calendar. But the moon, she goes her own way, changin’ every night. That’s why their New Year, it ain’t always the same day like ours. It moves around, just like the moon.
And then there’s these zodiac animals. Twelve of ’em, each one for a year. They got a Rat, an Ox, a Tiger, a Rabbit, a Dragon – yeah, a Dragon! Then a Snake, a Horse, a Goat, a Monkey, a Rooster, a Dog, and a Pig. Every year gets its own animal, and folks say you’re kinda like that animal if you’re born in its year.
- Rat: Them folks born in Rat years, they’re smart, like little mice sneakin’ around. They figure things out quick.
- Ox: Ox people, they’re strong and steady, like them big ol’ cows pullin’ the plow. You can count on ’em.
- Tiger: Tigers, they’re brave and bold, always ready to pounce. But sometimes they get a little too hot-headed.
- Rabbit: Rabbit folks, they’re gentle and kind, like them soft bunnies in the field. They like things peaceful.
- Dragon: Now, the Dragon, that’s a special one. Powerful and lucky, that’s what they say. Though I ain’t never seen no real dragon, mind you.
- Snake: Snake people, they’re wise and mysterious, kinda slidin’ through life quiet-like.
- Horse: Horses, they’re full of energy, always runnin’ around, doin’ things. Can’t keep ’em still.
- Goat: Goat folks, they’re calm and gentle, like them goats grazin’ on the hillside. They got a good heart.
- Monkey: Monkeys, they’re playful and clever, always gettin’ into mischief. But they’re fun to be around.
- Rooster: Rooster people, they’re proud and loud, like that rooster crowin’ in the mornin’. They like to be noticed.
- Dog: Dogs, they’re loyal and true, always there for you, just like a good ol’ farm dog.
- Pig: Pig folks, they’re kind and generous, always sharin’ what they got. They like the good life.
To figure out your animal, you gotta look at the year you was born. But it ain’t as simple as just the year, see? ‘Cause that lunar calendar, it messes things up. The Chinese New Year, it starts late January or early February, somethin’ like that. So, if you’re born in January or February, you gotta be careful, you might actually be the animal from the year before.
Like, say you was born in 1984. That’s a Rat year, easy peasy. But if you was born in January of 1985, well, hold your horses, ’cause the Chinese New Year might not have happened yet. You might still be a Rat, not an Ox. You gotta look it up on them calendars they got, the ones that show both the sun and the moon days.
Now, I don’t know about all this stuff for sure, I just hear things, you know? But folks take it real serious. They say it tells you about your personality, your luck, even who you should marry. Me? I just think it’s kinda fun, like them stories they used to tell ’round the fire.
It’s like lookin’ up at the sky. The sun, the moon, the stars… they all doin’ their own thing, movin’ around. And somehow, down here on earth, we’re all connected to it. That’s what them old folks used to say, anyway. And maybe they was right. Maybe we’re all just a bunch of Rats, Oxes, Tigers, and all the rest, dancin’ to the beat of the moon.

This lunar calendar, it makes things complicated, but it also makes things interesting. It’s like a whole ‘nother way of lookin’ at time and at ourselves. And who knows, maybe there’s somethin’ to it. Maybe them animals really do tell us somethin’ about who we are.
