Today, I wanted to mess around with the Chinese zodiac, specifically the year of the horse. I’ve always been curious about how these calendars work, so I decided to make a simple one myself.
First, I started by looking up some basic info about the Chinese zodiac. Gotta know what you’re working with, right? I found out that the years cycle through 12 animals, and the horse is one of them.

Figuring Out the Years
The tricky part was figuring out which years are horse years. I found some websites listing them, and I noticed a pattern. It’s every 12 years, obviously, So I grabbed a recent horse year,2014 ,and decided that woulb be my starting point.
Making a List
- I opened up a simple text editor. Nothing fancy, just something to jot down the years.
- I started with 2014 and kept adding 12 to get the future horse years: 2026, 2038, 2050, and so on.
- Then, I went backwards, subtracting 12 to get past horse years: 2002, 1990, 1978, etc.
- I added a bunch of years, both before and after 2014, until I had a decent-sized list.
The Result
It’s not super pretty or anything, but it works! I now have a list of horse years that I can easily reference.I could have easily added the other animals, but I was not in the mood to keep on going . Maybe I’ll expand on this later and make a full zodiac calendar. It was a fun little project to kill some time and learn something new!
