Today, I wanted to mess around with the Tarot de Marseille, specifically the 4 of Cups. I’ve been feeling a little blah lately, you know, that kind of “meh” feeling where nothing really excites you? So, I figured, why not see what the cards have to say?
I grabbed my deck – it’s a pretty standard, well-worn one. I shuffled it a few times, just kind of focusing on my general state of mind and what I was hoping to get out of this little experiment. Then, I laid out a simple three-card spread: past, present, and future. The 4 of Cups popped up in the present position. Go figure!

Here’s what I did, step-by-step:
- Shuffled the deck: I just shuffled until it felt “right.” No fancy techniques, just getting a feel for the cards.
- Laid out the spread: Three cards, face down, in a row.
- Flipped them over: One by one, starting with the past.
- Saw the 4 of Cups: Right there in the middle, representing my present.
My Take on the 4 of Cups (in this context)
Okay, so, the 4 of Cups in the Marseille deck usually shows a figure sitting under a tree, looking kind of bored or dissatisfied. Three cups are in front of him, and a fourth is being offered by a hand coming out of a cloud. To me, this screams “apathy” and “taking things for granted.” It’s like, there are good things around, but I’m too focused on what’s not there, or what I think I’m missing.
It really resonated with how I’ve been feeling. I realized I’ve been so caught up in my routine, and maybe a little self-pity, that I haven’t been appreciating the good stuff in my life. My family, my friends, even just having a roof over my head – these are things I should be grateful for, not just glossing over.
The other two cards in the spread (I won’t bore you with the details) kind of reinforced this idea. The “past” card hinted at a missed opportunity, and the “future” card suggested a need to be more open to new experiences.
So, basically, pulling the 4 of Cups was a bit of a wake-up call. It wasn’t some magical solution, but it helped me to see my situation from a different perspective. I finished my little Tarot session feeling a bit more grounded and motivated to shake things up a bit. I even made a mental note to call my mom – she’s always good for a chat and a reminder of what really matters.
All that from drawning a card randomly, pretty interesting.
