So, I got this idea to make a Chinese Zodiac calendar, you know, for 1969. I thought, “Hey, that sounds cool! I can totally do that.” So, I started digging around.
First, I needed to figure out what the animal was for 1969. Turns out, it’s the Rooster. Okay, good start!

Then, I needed to find the exact dates for the Lunar New Year in 1969. I used google to help with this and found a couple of websites. After I cross-referenced the two and confirmed they were the same, I learned that The Lunar New Year started on February 17th, 1969. So, anything before that date in 1969 would still be the previous animal, the Monkey.
Putting It Together
I grabbed a regular 1969 calendar, the kind you find online, and started marking it up. I highlighted February 17th as the big day, the start of the Rooster year.
Then I thought, “It would be neat to show the full cycle”. So I went back to the 1968 calendar and figured out the end of the previous monkey cycle, which was simple as I confirmed the date to be Feburary 16th, 1969.
Final Result
Now, here’s what I ended up with:
- January 1, 1969 – February 16, 1969: Year of the Monkey
- February 17, 1969 – December 31, 1969: Year of the Rooster
It’s not super fancy, but it does the job! It clearly shows when the Chinese Zodiac changed over in 1969. It was a fun little project, and I learned something new in the process. I think I might do this for other years too, just for kicks.
