Okay, so I wanted to make a Chinese zodiac calendar for 2017. I’ve always been kind of fascinated by the zodiac, and 2017 was the Year of the Rooster, which is my birth year, so it felt extra relevant.
First, I dug around online to get the basics straight. I needed to confirm the exact start and end dates for the Year of the Rooster within the Gregorian calendar. You know, Chinese New Year doesn’t line up perfectly with January 1st.

Then, I started thinking about the design. I didn’t want anything too complicated, just something clean and easy to understand. I decided to go with a simple table format.
The Building Process
- I used a simple spreadsheet program. It was the easiest way to organize the dates.
- I created columns for the month, date, and day of the week. Pretty standard stuff.
- I made sure to highlight the Chinese New Year date (January 28th, 2017) in a special color, maybe red. Because, lucky color!
- And I marked down the end date of this cycle, you know, when the Year of the Dog is started.
- I filled in all the dates for 2017, making sure each month started on the correct day. I double-checked this a few times because it’s easy to mess up.
- Finally, I added a little note at the top, something like, “2017: Year of the Fire Rooster,” and listed the start and end dates again for good measure.
It wasn’t super fancy, but it was exactly what I wanted. A functional, clear calendar showing the Year of the Rooster. I even printed out a copy and stuck it on my fridge! It was a fun little project, and it helped me feel a bit more connected to my zodiac sign that year. Sometimes, it’s the simple things, right?
