Okay, folks, let’s dive into my little project today: making some Chinese zodiac paper placemats!
I’ve been wanting to do something crafty and fun, and since Chinese New Year is always a vibrant theme, I decided to give this a shot. I’m no artist, but hey, that’s part of the charm, right?

Gathering My Supplies
First things first, I gathered all the stuff I needed. This was pretty basic:
- Colored paper (lots of red, of course!)
- Scissors
- Glue sticks (the kid-friendly kind, because, well, less mess)
- Markers – black and gold for that extra festive touch
- A printout of the Chinese zodiac animals. I just did a quick search online and found some simple outlines.
Getting Started: Cutting and Tracing
I started by picking out my base color for the placemats. Red felt like the obvious choice. Then, I took my printed zodiac animals and carefully cut them out. These became my stencils.
Next, I traced each animal onto different colored paper. I wanted each placemat to feature a different animal, so I made sure to vary the colors for a bit of a rainbow effect. This part was a little tedious, I won’t lie, but putting on some music helped!
Gluing and Decorating
Once I had all my animal cutouts, I arranged them on the red placemat bases. I played around with the placement a bit until I liked the look. Then, I grabbed my trusty glue stick and stuck them down. Simple as that!
Now for the fun part: decorating! I used the black marker to add some details to the animals – eyes, stripes on the tiger, that sort of thing. Then, with the gold marker, I added some flourishes around the edges of the placemats. I went for a bit of a swirly, festive design. It’s not perfect, but I think it looks pretty good!
The Finished Product!
And there you have it! My very own homemade Chinese zodiac paper placemats. They’re not exactly professional-looking, but they were super fun to make, and I think they’ll add a nice touch to my table. Plus, the kids will get a kick out of them, and that’s what really matters.

It’s a simple project, really, and you can totally customize it to your liking. You could use different colors, add glitter, or even write the names of the animals in Chinese characters. The possibilities are endless! The whole process, from gathering materials to the final decoration, took me an afternoon. And honestly, seeing the final product made it all worthwhile.
