So, I wanted to do something fun and educational with the kids today, and I thought, why not make a word search? And not just any word search, but one about constellations! It’s a great way to learn about the stars while having a bit of puzzle fun.
First, I grabbed a piece of paper and started jotting down some constellation names. You know, the big ones like Ursa Major, Orion, and Cassiopeia. I also threw in some lesser-known ones like Lynx and Serpens, just to make it a bit more challenging. My list must have had at least 15 different constellations, because, you know the more the merrier.

Next, I drew up a big grid on another piece of paper. I think I made it about 20×20 squares. Plenty of room to hide those constellation names! Then came the fun, but also kinda tedious, part. I started writing the constellation names into the grid. I placed them horizontally, vertically, and even diagonally. Some of them I even wrote backward, just to up the difficulty a bit. Gotta keep those little brains working, right?
Once all the constellation names were hidden in the grid, I filled in the remaining squares with random letters. I tried to make sure it looked all jumbled up, so the words wouldn’t be too obvious. This part took a while, but I jammed to some tunes, so that helped.
Testing the Game
-
I made a copy of the word search for myself. It’s only fair to test it out before giving it to others, I think.

I sat down with a pen and started hunting for the constellations. Some were easy to spot, but others really made me think. Those backward ones were tricky!
-
After finding them all (yes, I did!), I figured I had a pretty good word search on my hands.
Finally, I gave the word search to my kids. They dove right in, eager to find all the constellations. It was so much fun watching them work together, pointing out words they found and cheering each other on. Plus, they were learning about the stars without even realizing it! It was a total win-win.

And there you have it, a simple yet fun way to learn and play with constellations. I’m already thinking about what theme to do next. Maybe planets? Or types of stars? The possibilities are endless!
