Okay, so the other day I was messing around with some old family records, and I stumbled upon something interesting about my great-great-grandpa. He was born in 1892, and I got curious about his Chinese zodiac sign.
First, I needed to figure out the whole Chinese zodiac cycle thing. I remembered it has something to do with animals and a 12-year loop. So, I did a quick search to refresh my memory.

Getting Started: The Zodiac Basics
- I confirmed that the Chinese zodiac indeed operates on a 12-year cycle.
- Each year is represented by an animal.
- The order is Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig.
The Calculation Part
Now, the tricky part: figuring out which animal corresponded to 1892. I couldn’t just count, since i don’t know it, it’s a long time ago, it’s very troublesome. I found a method to calculate it:
- I took the year 1892.
- Then, I found 1900 is Rat year, I know rat is the beginning of cycle.
- 1900 – 1892 = 8.
- So I counted back from Rat.
- The Result is Dragon.
The Result: Dragon!
So, there it is! My great-great-grandpa, born in 1892, was a Dragon. I think that’s pretty cool! It’s a small detail, but it kind of connects me to his life in a way I hadn’t thought of before.
