Okay, so I’ve been wanting to get my hands on a set of Gustave Dore tarot cards for a while now. I mean, his artwork is just phenomenal, right? Super detailed, dramatic… the perfect vibe for tarot, I thought. So, I finally decided to just go for it.
First, I spent some time looking around online. I wanted to make sure I was getting a good quality deck, not some flimsy knock-off. I looked at a few different versions, checking out the card stock and the printing quality in the pictures as best I could.

After a bit of searching, I found a deck I liked. Seemed legit, decent reviews. I added it to my cart and hit that buy button. Boom! Done. Waiting was the hardest part, haha.
When the package finally arrived, I was like a kid at Christmas. I ripped that thing open. And wow, they were even better in person! The cards felt good, nice and thick, not flimsy at all. And the images… seriously, so crisp and clear. Dore’s illustrations really popped.
Getting Familiar with the Deck
I spent the next few days just getting to know the cards. I laid them all out, examined each one, really taking in the details. I even looked up some of the symbolism online, just to get a deeper understanding of Dore’s choices and how they relate to the traditional tarot meanings.
- Major Arcana: The drama! The scale! Dore’s “The Fool” really captures that sense of boundless potential and, you know, a bit of recklessness.
- Minor Arcana: Even the simpler scenes are packed with emotion. The “Ten of Swords” is, well, brutal, but in a beautiful way, if that makes sense.
I tried a few practice readings, just for myself, nothing too serious. It’s interesting to see how the artwork influences my interpretations. The imagery is so powerful, it really adds a layer of depth to the readings.
Overall, I’m super happy with my purchase. It’s not just a tarot deck, it’s like a mini art collection. If you’re into tarot and appreciate classic art, I definitely recommend checking out a Gustave Dore deck. You won’t be disappointed!
